Parental engagement in education is one of the most important factors in student success. Research consistently illustrates that when parents actively engage in their children’s education, students perform better academically, have higher self-esteem, and are more motivated to succeed. At Harmony Science Academy-Pflugerville, one parent exemplifies this impact: Zakaria Kouloughli, a dedicated volunteer and active participant in school activities, has been honored with one of the 15 prestigious Heroes for Children Awards by the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) for District 5.

The SBOE Heroes for Children Award recognizes exceptional volunteers and advocates whose efforts have a lasting impact on education. The award celebrates people who go above and beyond in their service to schools, contributing their time, skills, and dedication in many ways. Harmony Public Schools-Central Texas volunteers help shape our students' futures in many ways: leading parent-teacher organizations, advocating for educational improvements, mentoring students, and supporting key school programs.

Nominated by a staff member at HSA-Pflugerville, Kouloughli’s involvement in the school community sets an inspirational example. His journey as a volunteer is deeply rooted in his strong belief in the impact that mentors have. From the very beginning of entering the HSA-Pflugerville campus doors, Kouloughli understood the value of showing up for all students—not only his own two children. In addition to the SBOE award, Kouloughli also stands proud as the campus's Parent of the Year.

“Parental involvement is important because it helps strengthen the bond between home and school, showing students that their education is a priority and that the school and its community are part of a larger family,” Kouloughli explains. “It also allows parents to support the school, offer assistance to staff, provide feedback, and contribute to a positive, supportive environment for everyone.”

Whether helping to organize events like the Science Olympiad, assisting with transportation for students, or attending sports events to support the coach and cheer on teams, Kouloughli’s dedication has made a significant difference. In addition, his advocacy for values-based education was particularly evident when he represented parents during HSA-Pflugerville’s application toward earning a State School of Character designation.

Parents like Kouloughli provide more than just support; they offer a vital connection between the school and the home, bridging the gap to ensure students feel encouraged, supported, and motivated.

While many may picture a mother or another female figure when thinking about a school volunteer, being the only male recipient of the Heros for Children Award this year from across the state, Kouloughli's involvement indicates and important connection. According to Texas Parent Teacher Association, "Research shows that when fathers and father figures are engaged in children’s education, student grades and test scores improve, attendance increases and students are more involved in school activities. Father involvement is associated with children’s better socio-emotional and academic functioning." Active parent participation can also foster a sense of community within the school, showing students that they are part of something larger than themselves while enforcing the importance of education.

"I feel truly honored. I never considered my efforts to be extraordinary; I simply contributed a few hours of my time to help build a strong volleyball team and make a positive impact on the lives of school kids,” says Kouloughli. “It’s fulfilling to know that my efforts have been recognized, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to something meaningful.”

Kouloughli's story is a reminder of how parental involvement can transform the educational experience for students. His recognition as a Heroes for Children Award recipient is a testament to the power of school volunteers shaping the future of Harmony Public School-Central Texas students, one act of service at a time.
